Europe: lost paradise? Volunteering in a past and future Europe
Location: Athens, Greece
Dates: 3-10 January 2013
Participants: 23 (Uk, Ireland, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Turkey, Italy, Greece, Austria, Germany, Romania, Belgium)
Financed by: European Commission, Youth in Action programme, action 3.1
Promoted by: SCI Hellas
Trainers: Jenny Kuhn (Austria), Mihaela Dobroiu (Romania), Mauro Carta
The European financial crises has been affecting most of all young people: their perspectives, horizons and potential seem threatened by the current economic and political turmoil. Nevertheless, the group gathered in Athens (more precisely: in the Exarchia neighborhood) proved to be full of energies, ideas and enthusiasm. Aim of the project was to facilitate discussions about the causes and the social effects of the crises and to share experiences and information about the different scenarios in participants' countries. We had the chance to better understand the living conditions of asylum seekers in Athens and to meet members of migrants communities, political activists and local young people. During the last days of the project, participants, divided in thematic group, developed follow-up ideas (among them, a "Treaty of Athens" to promote and communicate the outcomes of our discussions).
